SOUTHEAST ALASKA ITINERARY

JUNEAU & SKAGWAY

The trip Southeast Alaska takes place in early June for optimal wildflower viewing and the opportunity to explore the area before the peak tourist season.  I take into consideration that Skagway and Juneau are very crowded with cruise boat passengers on certain days of the week so I try to schedule our trip so that we miss the crowds and can enjoy some peaceful excursions and hikes.  I have taken into consideration the requests of past clients and have included private whale watching/wildlife viewing and catch-and-release Salmon fishing.  Due to the inconsistent sailings on the Alaskan Marine Highway, we will not be taking the ferry to Skagway this year, and instead will fly between Skagway and Juneau.  This is a stunningly scenic flight in a small commercial airplane.

The details:

Sunday June 7  Arrive in Juneau, Alaska.  Travel to/from Juneau is on your own.  Alaska Airlines and Delta both service Juneau.  Lodging on Sunday night is at Capitol Inn, Juneau.  Transportation is provided by taxi to/from airport.  Dinner is on your own.

The Capital Inn is a beautiful bed and breakfast within walking distance of downtown Juneau. Breakfast is included in our stay along with afternoon wine and snacks.

Monday June 8.  Breakfast at the Capital Inn.  8:30 am Depart to cruise ship docks where we will take a small bus to Douglas Island and a visit with Alaska X Musher Camp.  Our sled dogs spend the summer in Juneau giving rides to cruise ship passengers and we will play "tourist" as we get to visit the dogs and take a ride on a wheeled cart.  In the afternoon we will take a short but strenuous hike up the Mt. Roberts Trail which will take us to the top of the Mt. Roberts Tramway.  We will take our time hiking up as there are many scenic overlooks and stopping points.  We will have dinner (on your own) at the Timberline restaurant at the top of the tram.  If you prefer to skip hiking to the top, you can head to the Mt. Roberts Tramway for a ride to the top.  We will all take the tram back down the mountain.

Tuesday  June 9.  Breakfast at the Capital Inn.   9 am Depart for The Local Guy Charters with Captain Adam.  This will be an unforgettable whale watching and wildlife sightseeing excursion.  More details to come!  Dinner on your own in Juneau.

Thursday June 11. Breakfast at the Skagway Inn.  After breakfast we will split into small groups for salmon fishing (catch-and-release) and wildlife viewing.  This is a short (4 hr) trip where you will get to see the Skagway area from the sea with Never Monday Charters. If you group is not on the boat, you'll have plenty of time to explore downtown Skagway.

Friday June 12.  Breakfast at the Skagway Inn. 7:00 am Depart for the White Pass and Yukon Railroad where we will take the famous White Pass train to be dropped off along the tracks for the Laughton Glacier Hike.   Note that a passport is required for this trip.  We will get off the train, do our hike to the glacier and enjoy a picnic lunch (included).  The train will pick us back up at 3:30 pm for our return to Skagway.  If you prefer not to hike, you can take the full day train trip instead.  Dinner is on your own.  At 7 pm we will meet up downtown  for the Days of ’98 variety show.  You do not need to “dress up” but we will have fun at this old time Skagway vaudeville program and mock gambling.

Saturday June 13 Breakfast at the Skagway Inn. 8:30 am Depart for a walking tour of historical Skagway led by a National Park Ranger.  Optional morning activity:  The Skagway Marathon or Half Marathon!  Yes, there's a race this weekend and you are welcome to participate!  We will all be sure to cheer you on if you choose to run.  We can easily adjust our activities and hiking schedule if we have people who are participating in this event.  After a snack and a break, we will venture to the Dewey Lake Hike.  This is a mildly strenuous hike around Dewey Lake where we will learn a little more about the unique history of Skagway.  After lunch you will have time to explore and shop in downtown Skagway or return to the motel to relax.  Dinner on your own.
