GRAND MARAIS ITINERARY 2021

Our trip to Grand Marais takes place in September when the bugs have subsided and the fall colors are spectacular!  We will explore this beautiful area by trail and helicopter!

The details:

This is a general itinerary and may change slightly based up weather.  All breakfasts, lunches and dinners (with the exception of one dinner) are provided.  Lunch is generally on the trail and is a pack-your-own (food provided) and breakfasts and dinners are catered from a local establishment that specializes in farm to table meals.  Please bring your own day pack for carrying your lunch, water bottle and camera.  Hiking poles are suggested but not required.  Most hikes are approximately 7-8 miles or 4-5 hours in length with plenty of stops along the way. If you'd like to bring your bikes/mountain bikes with you, there are great trails near the lodge and it's also an easy ride into Grand Marais on a paved road.

September 20--Arrive by 5 pm at Sunset Cabins, 1.5 miles east of Grand Marais, located on the shore of Lake Superior.  We will be staying in The Lodge, which has individual guest rooms and shared bathrooms.  We will have a welcome dinner and drinks at 6 pm, catered at The Lodge. https://sunsetcabinsmi.net/

September 21--Guided hiking along the North Country Trail to the west of Grand Marais.  This hike takes us along rocky beaches and beautiful waterfalls.   Lunch along the trail is provided at a beautiful overlook.  If you choose to do the entire hike, the distance is approximately 6 miles.  Catered dinner provided at The Lodge.

September 22--Guided hiking near the Blind Sucker Flooding along the North Country Trail and Blind Sucker Pathway.  Lunch along the trail is provided at a beautiful overlook. If you choose to do the entire hike, the distance is approximately 9 miles.  Catered dinner provided at The Lodge.

September 23--Guided hiking near the Grand Sable Dunes and Hurricane River.  This hike will include a stop for lunch and is approximately 8 miles.  Lunch is provided along the trail.  Dinner on your own at the Tavern.

September 24--See the UP from the air!  Kim Darst, accomplished veteran pilot, will take you on a magnificent ride to see the fall colors from the air.  You can even learn how to drive the helicopter!  The rest of the day can be spent kayaking near our resort, doing a short hike through the school forest, exploring the town or rock picking.  Catered dinner provided at The Lodge.

September 25--Departure from Grand Marais and drive to Muskellonge Lake State Park for a short hike, then onto a brief visit with the sled dogs at Nature's Kennel.  You can't come this close to our home without stopping in to get some puppy kisses!
